At least 16 passengers sustained injuries when a private Volvo bus overturned in Damtal near Nurpur in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, on Sunday, according to police. The bus was travelling from Jammu to Dehradun on the Jammu-Jalandhar National Highway with 57 passengers on board when it apparently went out of control and overturned on an adjoining service lane.
Rescue and Medical Response
Police personnel rushed to the spot immediately after the accident and rescued the injured passengers. All injured individuals were shifted to the civil hospital at Indora for medical treatment. The condition of the injured is reported to be stable, and they are receiving necessary care.
Investigation Underway
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered in connection with the accident. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the incident. Officials are examining multiple factors, including mechanical failure, speeding, and other possible causes that may have led to the bus overturning.
According to a police spokesperson, "We are investigating all angles, including the condition of the vehicle and driver error, to ascertain the cause of the accident." The bus was a private Volvo coach, and authorities are also checking whether the driver maintained proper control of the vehicle.
Broader Implications
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on national highways in northern India. The Jammu-Jalandhar National Highway is a major route used by many long-distance buses, and accidents due to overspeeding, mechanical faults, and driver fatigue have been reported in the past. Authorities have urged passengers to ensure that buses they travel on adhere to safety standards and that drivers follow traffic rules.
The police have requested any witnesses to come forward and provide information that could help in the investigation. Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
