18 Tremors in June Raise Alarm
The earthquake-prone Kangra-Chamba region recorded 18 seismic events in June, underscoring its high vulnerability to earthquakes. Seismologists have warned that the area remains at risk of a major earthquake exceeding magnitude 7.0, urging authorities and residents to strengthen disaster preparedness.
Seismic Activity Details
According to seismic records, tremors ranging from 2.1 to 5.0 magnitude occurred between June 5 and June 29. The strongest earthquake, measuring 5.0, struck on June 5. Experts note that the Himalayan region is one of the most active seismic belts globally due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Historical Context: 1905 Kangra Earthquake
A report from the Seismology Department recalls the devastating Kangra earthquake of April 4, 1905, which measured approximately 7.8 magnitude. That quake remains one of the deadliest in Indian history, claiming 20,000 lives and destroying nearly one lakh houses across the region.
Expert Warnings and Research
The report cites earthquake researchers who caution that seismic activity in the Kangra region should not be ignored. While small earthquakes do not necessarily signal an imminent major quake, they highlight the need for constant monitoring and preparedness. This warning is supported by findings from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, which previously identified the Kangra-Chamba-Dharamsala belt as an area with potential for a future high-magnitude earthquake.
Call for Preparedness Measures
Experts have urged residents to remain alert without panicking. They stress the importance of earthquake-resistant construction, regular disaster preparedness drills, and public awareness to minimize casualties and property damage in the event of a major seismic event. Authorities have been advised to ensure strict compliance with building safety norms and strengthen emergency response systems in this highly sensitive Himalayan region. Experts have also expressed concern over the state government's decision to allow 10-storeyed buildings in Himachal Pradesh.
