Under the ongoing anti-drug campaign 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', Kapurthala district has witnessed a staggering 187 per cent surge in heroin seizures in 2024 compared to the previous year. The police have intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking, leading to record confiscations and arrests.
Dramatic Increase in Seizures
According to official data, the police seized 8.5 kg of heroin in 2024, up from 2.96 kg in 2023. This marks a 187 per cent increase. The number of cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act also rose from 108 in 2023 to 145 in 2024, a 34 per cent jump.

Police Operations and Strategies
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kapurthala, Dr. Sandeep Kumar Garg, attributed the success to targeted operations, increased surveillance, and community cooperation. Special teams were formed to track peddlers and suppliers, and checkpoints were set up at vulnerable areas.
- Raids conducted in 124 villages and 15 urban wards.
- Use of sniffer dogs and drone surveillance.
- Coordination with neighboring districts to curb cross-border smuggling.
Community and Rehabilitation Efforts
The campaign also focuses on prevention and rehabilitation. Awareness programs were held in schools and colleges, and de-addiction centers provided counseling to over 200 individuals. The police have urged citizens to report suspicious activities through a dedicated helpline.
Despite the progress, challenges remain. The SSP noted that drug traffickers are adopting new modus operandi, including using courier services and social media for transactions. The police are adapting by enhancing cyber surveillance and forensic capabilities.
The 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign, launched by the Punjab government, aims to make the state drug-free. The results in Kapurthala reflect a concerted effort by law enforcement and the community to combat the drug menace.
