A two-day hands-on 3D prosthetic training programme for prosthetic and orthotic professionals from across the northeastern region concluded on a positive note in Shillong on Saturday. The event took place at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, State Central Library premises, and focused on enhancing facilities for persons with disabilities (PwDs) in the region.
Organisers and Objectives
The programme was organised by the office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (Divyangjan) and a private company. The primary aim was to strengthen the capacity of rehabilitation professionals, promote inter-departmental collaboration, and facilitate the adoption of emerging 3D prosthetic and orthotic technologies in rehabilitation services across the northeastern states.
Training Highlights
An official stated, “Professionals from various northeastern states were trained in practical skills and technical knowledge in advanced 3D printing technologies used in the production of assistive and rehabilitation devices.” The training included hands-on sessions where participants learned to design and fabricate customised prosthetic and orthotic devices using 3D printing techniques. This approach is expected to significantly improve the quality and accessibility of assistive devices for individuals with disabilities in the region.
Impact on Rehabilitation Services
The programme is anticipated to bridge the gap in specialised rehabilitation services in northeastern India, where access to advanced prosthetic and orthotic care has been limited. By equipping local professionals with cutting-edge skills, the initiative aims to reduce dependency on external resources and ensure timely, cost-effective solutions for PwDs. The collaborative effort also underscores the commitment of the Meghalaya government and national institutes to inclusive development.
The successful conclusion of the training marks a significant step towards empowering rehabilitation professionals and improving the lives of persons with disabilities in the northeast.
