AIIMS Raipur achieved a medical milestone by successfully reimplanting the amputated hand of a 70-year-old man following a severe industrial accident. The patient, whose left forearm was caught in a paddy husk machine, was rushed to the hospital within two hours of the incident. The severed limb was carefully preserved in an ice-lined container, which played a crucial role in the success of the procedure.
Emergency Surgery and Medical Team
After initial stabilisation, the patient underwent an emergency surgery that lasted approximately eight hours. The procedure involved repairing multiple damaged tissues, including bones, blood vessels, nerves, and muscles. The orthopaedic team performed bone shortening and fixation to ensure proper alignment, while anaesthetists closely monitored the patient's condition throughout the surgery.
Postoperative Recovery
Following a month-long hospital stay, the reimplanted hand has shown excellent blood flow, and the surgical wounds have largely healed. Doctors anticipate that bone healing will continue over the next two months, while functional recovery will require a longer period and will depend on the patient's rehabilitation efforts.
Medical experts emphasised that timely arrival at the hospital and proper preservation of the amputated limb were key factors in this case. These measures significantly improved the chances of a successful reattachment and recovery.
