The annual four-day Ambubachi Mela is set to commence at the Kamakhya Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, on June 22. The Kamrup (Metro) district administration and the temple management committee have finalized all preparations for the grand event.
Sanctum Sanctorum Closure and Reopening
Kabindra Prasad Sarma, the bor doloi (head priest) of Kamakhya Temple, announced that the sanctum sanctorum will remain closed from 9:08 PM on June 22 and will reopen on the morning of June 26 after the completion of all rituals.
Expected Devotee Turnout
Sarma revealed that approximately 2.5 million visitors were recorded last year, and the temple authorities anticipate a similar turnout this year.
Significance of Ambubachi Mela
Ambubachi is the largest religious congregation in Northeast India, drawing lakhs of devotees, tantriks, sadhus, and tourists. For followers of tantrism, this period is considered especially auspicious for achieving Mantra Siddhi. The festival celebrates the annual menstrual cycle of the presiding goddess, Kamakhya.
Kamakhya is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, which are associated with the legend of Sati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva. It is believed that her yoni (reproductive organs) fell at the site where the temple now stands. Ancient texts such as 'Yogini Tantra' and 'Kalika Puran' reference both ancient Kamrupa and Kamakhya.
Devotee Access and Facilities
During the mela, devotees will be allowed to enter the temple premises from 5 AM to 6 PM. The VIP darshan facility will remain suspended from the start of the festival until June 30.
A district administration official stated that drinking water facilities will be provided along all routes used by foot travelers. Additionally, carpets will be laid across the pilgrimage route to help devotees cope with the summer heat.
Security and Cleanliness Measures
Security has been significantly tightened with the installation of more than 500 CCTV cameras. The official confirmed that the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will oversee cleanliness arrangements. Furthermore, over 500 volunteers will be deployed by the temple authority to assist with crowd management and other tasks.
