Ancient coins vital historical documents: Expert

Trichy: Ancient coins serve as crucial historical documents that offer valuable insights into the history and commerce of bygone eras, stated Arumuga Seetharaman, director of the Thanjavur Numismatic Research Centre. He was delivering a lecture organized by the Thanjavur Tourism Development Council on Saturday.

Lecture on Tamil Nadu Coins

The event, titled ‘Tamil Nadu Coins – 400 BCE to 1840 CE’, was conducted under the guidance of district collector R Revathi. Seetharaman traced the evolution of currency in India, beginning with the barter system and leading up to the emergence of coinage in the 5th century BCE.

“Coins are vital historical documents that provide valuable insights into the names of rulers, administrative languages, religious beliefs, and the economic conditions of different eras,” he said.
