Visakhapatnam: Andhra University witnessed a festive atmosphere over the past week as part of its centenary celebrations. The campus was illuminated with decorative lighting and thematic installations, while various cultural programmes, student activities, exhibitions, and ceremonial events added to the celebratory mood, drawing enthusiastic participation from across the university community.
Different departments organised celebrations across the campus, and thousands of alumni and current students took part, cherishing their memories.
Week-Long Festivities
The week-long festivities commenced on April 18 with an event organised for the affiliated colleges. AU College of Arts and Commerce conducted its celebrations on April 19, followed by the AU College of Science and Pharmaceutical Sciences, AU Engineering College, and the Dr BR Ambedkar College of Law, each hosting their respective centenary celebrations. From international students organising food festivals featuring cuisines from their native countries to various competitions, women's walkathons, guest lectures, and cultural programmes, the celebrations were conducted in a memorable manner befitting the 100-year milestone.
Art and Photo Exhibitions
Adding to the vibrancy, students of fine arts organised exhibitions showcasing paintings, sculptures, and creative installations, while a special photo exhibition captured rare archival images and significant milestones from the university's hundred-year journey. These exhibitions drew considerable attention from visitors, alumni, and the academic community alike.
Alumni Reunions
Cherishing nostalgia and their student days, former students who attended the events fondly recalled their university experiences. Many remembered the support extended by the authorities and the library in helping them secure employment opportunities. Departments also honoured and felicitated their distinguished alumni during these programmes, making the occasions more meaningful.
Campus Beautification
As part of the centenary celebrations, beautification works across the university were carried out. A new fountain was installed near the AU administrative building, along with decorative lighting arrangements, enhancing the overall grandeur of the campus. Hoardings were put up at the airport, railway station, and various locations across the city. The university also utilised social media and other platforms extensively to publicise the events and attract large crowds.
Dignitaries in Attendance
Deputy chief minister K Pawan Kalyan attended one of the events in the run-up to the centenary celebrations, while eminent personalities, including former vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu and Odisha governor K Hari Babu, along with noted industrialists and public figures, added further prominence and appeal to the celebrations.
