A routine trip to collect sarai seeds in a forest in Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari district turned tragic on Tuesday when a swarm of honeybees attacked two family members, resulting in the death of a woman and serious injuries to her son-in-law.
Incident Details
The incident took place near Palgaon village in the Dugli region. The woman and her relative had ventured into the forest to gather sarai seeds and other forest produce. According to local residents, the pair was suddenly attacked by a large swarm of bees.
Panic-stricken, the two ran in different directions in an attempt to escape, but the bees relentlessly stung them multiple times. Villagers reported that both victims collapsed in the forest due to the severity of the stings.
Rescue and Medical Response
Family members and locals later rescued the victims and rushed them to a nearby hospital. The woman succumbed to her injuries during treatment, while her son-in-law, who sustained serious injuries, remains admitted. Doctors have stated that his condition is stable and he is recovering.
Community Shock and Rising Risks
The incident has sent shockwaves through the village. Residents noted that bee swarms have become increasingly aggressive in forested areas during the peak summer season. Many villagers depend on forests for daily activities such as collecting sarai seeds, tendu leaves, and firewood, forcing them to venture deep into wooded areas despite growing threats from wild animals, insects, and extreme heat.
