Bihar Hospital Fire: Tragedy Strikes Muzaffarpur
A horrific fire broke out in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, on the night of June 4, 2026, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 patients. The incident has sent shockwaves through the state, prompting an immediate investigation by local authorities.
Details of the Incident
The fire erupted around 11:30 PM in the ICU of the Krishna Medical Centre and Hospital. According to eyewitnesses, flames quickly engulfed the ward, trapping patients who were critically ill and unable to move. Fire tenders rushed to the spot, and rescue teams worked tirelessly to evacuate survivors. Despite their efforts, 10 patients succumbed to severe burns and smoke inhalation.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also ordered a high-level inquiry into the cause of the fire.
Rescue and Aftermath
Rescue operations continued through the night, with firefighters battling the blaze for over two hours. The injured were shifted to other hospitals in the city for treatment. Hospital authorities reported that the ICU housed 14 patients at the time of the fire, and four managed to escape with injuries.
Local police have registered a case and are investigating whether negligence or a short circuit caused the tragedy. The hospital's owner and staff are being questioned.
Government Response
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar took cognizance of the incident and directed officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured. He also instructed the district administration to conduct a safety audit of all hospitals in the state. The opposition has demanded strict action against those responsible.
This incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety standards in Indian hospitals, especially in ICUs where patients are most vulnerable. Activists have called for stricter enforcement of fire safety norms and regular inspections.

This is not the first such tragedy in Bihar. In 2021, a fire at a COVID-19 hospital in Bihar claimed 14 lives. Similar incidents have occurred in other states, highlighting a recurring failure to implement safety protocols.
