BMC Targets Land Acquisition Completion in Three Months
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a goal to finalize land acquisition for the permanent right of way of the Mumbai Coastal Road (North) project between Versova and Bhayander within the next three months. The civic body requires approximately 58 hectares of land and has already secured about 82 hectares for the project.
Chief Minister Inspects Progress, Reaffirms 2028 Deadline
During a recent inspection of various project locations, the Chief Minister reiterated the December 2028 deadline for completion. BMC Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar stated, “Work is going on in full swing and land acquisition will be completed in the next three months.”
Work Progress Across Seven Packages
According to civic officials, the project is divided into seven packages, with an overall 10% to 15% of work completed since construction began in March 2026. A civic official explained, “We received mangroves permission only in January. We have also received environment permissions, high court permissions and working permission from the forest department. We hope to get possession of all the land on the alignment of the coastal road. We are approaching the courts with regard to private land and are hopeful of getting permissions from the court. All Stage 1 permissions have been received.”
Ongoing Construction Activities
Currently, piling work is underway at some locations, while work on piers has commenced at other sites. Utility diversion is being carried out near Amarnath Towers at Versova and Mindspace, Malad. Tunnel shaft work is progressing near Marina Enclave, Malad, and construction of a Temporary Access Bridge (TAB), along with piling work, is ongoing at the Charkop interchange.
Environmental Impact on Mangroves
The Coastal Road (North) project will affect up to 45,000 mangroves, with 36,000 temporarily impacted and 9,000 permanently destroyed.
