Silchar: In a major crackdown on narcotics, Cachar police seized drugs valued at over Rs 2 crore and apprehended two individuals hailing from Mizoram, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Operation Details

Acting on a specific tip-off regarding the movement of contraband, law enforcement authorities established a naka checkpoint along National Highway 37 at Kanthagram, falling under the jurisdiction of Lakhipur police station, on Friday evening. During the operation, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) was intercepted, and its two occupants were taken into custody.

Recovery of Contraband

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 1.065 kilograms of morphine in crude form and 22 grams of heroin meticulously concealed inside two soap cases. In addition to the narcotics, the vehicle and two mobile phones were seized as part of the investigation.

Rajat Kumar Pal, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) for Cachar, stated that preliminary tests confirmed the presence of heroin and morphine. “The estimated value of the seized narcotics is over Rs 2 crore in the black market,” he said.

Arrests and Identification

The arrested individuals have been identified as David Hmar and Rolamal Hmar, both residents of Kolasib district in Mizoram. They are currently in police custody and further interrogation is underway to ascertain the source and destination of the drugs.

This seizure marks a significant achievement for the Cachar police in their ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining a strict vigil along the state's borders and highways to prevent the inflow of illegal substances.
