Chhatbir Zoo Implements Extensive Measures to Protect Animals from Summer Heat
Chhatbir Zoo Takes Steps to Shield Animals from Extreme Heat

In a dedicated effort to ensure the proper care and upkeep of animals during the ongoing scorching summer season, the Chhatbir Zoo authorities have made elaborate arrangements to safeguard wildlife from extreme heat conditions. The zoo management has undertaken comprehensive measures to provide relief and ensure the well-being of various categories of animals housed in the zoo.

Cooling Systems for Carnivores

Desert coolers and air circulator fans have been installed in the night shelters of carnivorous animals, including tigers, leopards, lions, bears, and other feline and canine species. The animal management cell remains vigilant round-the-clock to ensure that all shelters remain cool and dry. Windows have been covered with mesh to maintain a mosquito-free environment.

Shade and Water Supply

Several portions of the animal houses and enclosures have also been covered with 75% density agro nets, which help in reducing the surrounding temperature. Tankers and tractors have been kept on standby to ensure uninterrupted water supply across the zoo in case of any emergency.

Herbivore Shelters and Pools

For herbivorous animals, temporary shelters and huts made of ‘kanna’ (Saccharum munja), wooden logs, and bamboo have been erected in enclosures to protect the animals from heat stroke and harsh sunlight. Muddy shallow pools filled with water have been created in the enclosures of elephants, Manipur deer, swamp deer, and also in the deer safari area to facilitate wallowing and mud baths for animals. Concrete water pools are also being kept filled round-the-clock.

Bird Protection Measures

For birds, all cages and aviaries have been covered with 75% density agro-nets and tightly secured jute mats to shield them from hot winds and direct sunlight, thereby protecting them from heat stroke. Sprinkler showers have also been installed in peasantry and small aviaries to keep the birds comfortable during the intense summer heat.
