A tragic incident in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district has left 10 people dead and one missing after a family group was swept away while collecting bivalves at the Alvekodi estuary in Bhatkal taluk. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when eight members of a single family entered the shallow estuarine waters for bivalve fishing. Sudden rough sea conditions and strong waves caught them off guard, sweeping several individuals away.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
Police have confirmed the recovery of eight bodies, while two persons remain missing. Rescue operations are underway with the assistance of fire and emergency personnel, police teams, and local fishermen. Two injured individuals have been shifted to Manipal Hospital, and three women were rescued and are receiving treatment.
Victims and Family Background
All victims belonged to the same family from Saradahole Harihitlu village in Bhatkal. Locals reported that weather conditions changed abruptly, making the sea extremely rough. The meteorological department had earlier issued warnings advising fishermen and the public not to venture into the sea.
Government Response
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. The authorities continue to search for the missing person.
