Couple Held at Varanasi Airport with 20 kg Hydroponic Weed

LUCKNOW: Two alleged drug couriers from Indore, who were posing as a couple, were apprehended at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi on Friday evening. Authorities recovered approximately 20 kilograms of hydroponic weed from their luggage, marking a significant seizure in the region.

Identification of the Accused

The suspects have been identified as Shehanaj Hussain, 37, a resident of Bank Chandan Nagar in Indore, and Yusoof, 40, a resident of Marothiya Bazar, Sarafa Saifi Mohalla in Indore. Both individuals were taken into custody following a routine immigration check.

Details of the Arrest

According to officials, the duo arrived at Varanasi airport on Air India Express flight IX 215 from Bangkok. During immigration procedures, the on-duty officer grew suspicious after analyzing their travel history and questioning them about their relationship. Investigators discovered that Yusoof had departed for Bangkok on May 21, while Shehanaj had traveled separately on May 20 via Mumbai and Delhi. During initial questioning, the two claimed they were engaged, but officials noted inconsistencies in their responses, which heightened suspicion.

Discovery of Contraband

During a detailed interrogation, the passengers allegedly admitted that two bags had been handed over to them in Bangkok by an unidentified person for transport to India. The passengers were then handed over to the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs for further examination. Upon opening the bags, authorities found hydroponic weed packed in 22 packets. Officials reported that 20 packets weighed around 550 grams each, while two larger packets weighed approximately 5.5 kilograms each, bringing the total seizure to nearly 20 kilograms, including packaging.

Value of the Seized Contraband

Officials estimated the value of the seized contraband at around Rs 20 crore, based on previous cases involving hydroponic cannabis. Hydroponic weed, known for its high potency, is often cultivated without soil using nutrient-rich water solutions.

Ongoing Investigation

Further investigation is underway to trace the source and intended recipients of the consignment. Authorities are also probing whether the accused are part of a larger drug trafficking network operating between Thailand and India.
