New Delhi: Parts of Delhi experienced intense spells of rain and hailstorm on Tuesday evening, further cooling the already pleasant weather. The extreme weather, particularly in the southwest region, led to the diversion of five flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport between 2 pm and 3:30 pm, according to airport officials.
Gusty Winds and Hail Reported
Several areas witnessed gusty winds, heavy rain, and hail towards late evening. While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued no color-coded warning for Wednesday, a thundery development is expected towards late evening. The prevailing western disturbance is likely to subside soon, leading to a gradual rise in temperatures.
Temperature and Rainfall Data
On Tuesday, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 33.6 degrees Celsius, six notches above normal. The IMD predicts a gradual increase in temperatures from Thursday onwards, starting at 35-37 degrees Celsius and reaching 40 degrees Celsius by Sunday. Safdarjung recorded 4.6 mm of rainfall until 8:30 am, with trace rainfall in the subsequent nine hours. Palam logged trace rainfall until 8:30 am but received 9.8 mm until 5:30 pm. The Ridge area recorded 11.9 mm until 8:30 am, while Najafgarh logged 0.5 mm until 8:30 am and 6.5 mm in the next nine hours.
“There were intense showers and reports of hail, particularly from southwest Delhi,” an IMD official said. A maximum wind speed of 39 km/h was recorded at Pitampura. The minimum temperature stood at 19.6 degrees Celsius.
Air Quality Improves
The air quality in Delhi improved significantly, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 86, the best since October 2025. This improvement is attributed to the rain and hailstorm that helped settle dust and pollutants.
