Madikeri: The carcass of an elephant calf was discovered in Abhyat Mangala village in Kushalnagar taluk on Monday. The calf, believed to be about four months old, was part of a herd that had ventured out of the forest in search of food and water.
Calf Dies After Falling into Lake
According to forest officials, the calf got separated from its herd and fell into a lake located within a coffee plantation, leading to its death. Kushalnagar range forest officer Rakshith, along with sub-range forest officer Sachin Nimbalkar, visited the site to assess the situation.
Locals Block Road Protesting Tiger Attacks
Meanwhile, local residents staged a road blockade on Monday evening, expressing their anger over frequent tiger attacks on livestock near Panchavalli on the Gonikoppal-Mysuru state highway. The protest caused significant traffic disruption. The villagers claimed that three tigers had been spotted in the area and demanded that forest officials capture them. They also burned tyres in the middle of the road to draw attention to their grievances.
Officials Promise Action
Following the protest, forest department officials and police arrived at the scene. They assured the protesters of compensation for the livestock losses and promised to launch an operation to locate and capture the tigers. The situation was brought under control after these assurances.
