Bhopal: In a significant conservation milestone, four endangered wild buffaloes will be released in Kanha National Park on Tuesday, marking the species' return to Madhya Pradesh after more than four decades. The animals, sourced from Kaziranga National Park in Assam, have been transported over nearly 2,000 kilometers in specially designed crates under constant veterinary supervision. They are expected to arrive by Monday night.
Chief Minister to Oversee Release
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will oversee the release ceremony. The translocation is part of a long-term plan to reintroduce the species, which was last recorded in the state in 1979. Initially, the buffaloes will be kept in soft-release enclosures to acclimatize before being gradually released into the wild.
Conservation Goals
Officials stated that the effort aims to establish a sustainable breeding population and restore grassland ecosystems. Wildlife authorities from Assam and Madhya Pradesh are jointly executing the programme, with careful monitoring to ensure the animals' successful adaptation.
The reintroduction of wild buffaloes is expected to boost biodiversity in Kanha National Park and serve as a model for similar conservation projects across India.
