Environmentalists in Mysuru have strongly opposed the proposed construction of an underpass at Kukkarahalli Lake Junction, urging authorities to instead close the nearby LC-1 level crossing. The activists have been raising concerns about the potential loss of over 30 to 35 trees that would be felled to make way for the project. They are also apprehensive about the underpass's impact on the heritage precinct surrounding the lake, which has inspired literary figures such as Kuvempu and R K Narayan. The area is also home to heritage structures like Crawford Hall. The opposition comes as the city grapples with balancing infrastructure development and environmental conservation.
