Former Mohali deputy mayor Rana Bedi has demanded the establishment of a dog shelter at Samgoli, highlighting the growing menace of stray dogs in the area. In a letter to the municipal corporation, Bedi emphasized the urgent need for a dedicated facility to address the rising number of stray dog attacks and ensure their proper care.
Rising Stray Dog Menace
Bedi pointed out that the population of stray dogs in Mohali has increased significantly, leading to frequent incidents of biting and harassment of residents, especially children and the elderly. He noted that the current arrangements for stray dogs are inadequate, with no proper shelter or veterinary care available.
Proposed Shelter at Samgoli
The former deputy mayor suggested that a piece of land at Samgoli, which is already under the possession of the municipal corporation, could be utilized for the shelter. He argued that this location is suitable as it is away from residential areas and has enough space to house the animals.
Key Features of the Proposed Shelter:
- Separate enclosures for male and female dogs
- A veterinary clinic for treatment and sterilization
- Proper waste disposal system
- Round-the-clock security and caretakers
Public Support
Several residents of Mohali have expressed support for Bedi's demand. Local activist Sunita Sharma said, "Stray dogs have become a serious problem in our colony. We hope the administration takes immediate action to set up the shelter."
The municipal corporation is yet to respond to the demand. However, officials have indicated that they are considering the proposal and will take a decision soon. If approved, the shelter will be the first of its kind in the region, providing much-needed relief to both the animals and the residents.
