Female Indian Gaur Dies from Suspected Sunstroke in Chandrapur

A fully grown female Indian gaur was discovered dead in the Zharan forest range of Chandrapur district, with preliminary investigations pointing to sunstroke as the likely cause amid scorching temperatures of around 44 degrees Celsius.

Discovery and Initial Response

The carcass was located near Bhatali Road in Compartment Number 117 of the Akasapur Round on Saturday, after local residents alerted the forest department. A team led by Range Forest Officer Sandeep Madavi promptly arrived at the scene. Initially, officials suspected a road accident because the animal was lying close to the roadside.

Detailed Examination

A thorough inspection, however, revealed no external injuries or any evidence of a vehicle collision. Veterinary officer Dr. Prajakta Lengure conducted an on-site post-mortem examination. Based on the findings, sunstroke was identified as the probable cause of death.
