GNDU 51st Convocation: 490 Students to Receive Degrees

Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) is set to hold its 51st Convocation on July 12, during which 490 students will be awarded degrees and 90 scholars will receive PhD degrees. Punjab Governor and Chancellor of the university, Gulab Chand Kataria, will preside over the ceremony as the chief guest and deliver the convocation address.

Preparations and Awards

Reviewing the preparations on Wednesday, Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) Karamjeet Singh held meetings with faculty members to ensure a smooth conduct of the event. The VC said that, besides the award of degrees, the university would confer three Chancellor’s Medals and 37 Memorial Medals on outstanding students. An honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) degree will also be conferred on Jaspreet Singh, a distinguished US-based lawyer and alumnus of the university, in recognition of his professional achievements and contribution to establishing the Guru Nanak Chair at GNDU.

University’s Achievements and Legacy

Speaking about the university’s achievements, Prof Karamjeet Singh said that since its establishment in 1969 to commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the GNDU had emerged as one of the country’s leading institutions of higher education. He said the university had built its reputation on the core values of knowledge, research, humanity and service, with thousands of alumni serving in administration, the judiciary, science, industry, education, sports and other fields across the world.

Sporting Excellence and Digital Initiatives

Highlighting the university’s sporting legacy, the VC said the GNDU had won the prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy a record 25 times, making it one of the country’s premier centres for sporting excellence. The VC also said the university had strengthened its digital governance by launching a new official website and an open and distance learning portal. He added that the university had expanded its academic offerings to more than 135 courses.

Future Vision

Emphasising the institution’s future vision, he said the GNDU remained committed to promoting quality education, research, innovation, sports and cultural excellence while nurturing socially responsible, ethically grounded and globally competent graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to society and nation-building.
