The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, has issued a thunderstorm alert for parts of Haryana, predicting moderate to light thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds on Thursday. The alert is valid until 4:30 pm.
Moderate Thunderstorm Warning
A moderate thunderstorm with wind speeds of 40-60 kmph and lightning is very likely over areas including Taoru, Ballabgarh, Sohna, Gurugram, Bahadurgarh, Sampla, Rohtak, Faridabad, Kharkhoda, Sonipat, Ganaur, Samalkha, Gohana, and Israna. Residents in these regions are advised to remain cautious.
Light Thunderstorm Forecast
Additionally, a light thunderstorm with wind speeds of 30-40 kmph and lightning is predicted over Firozpur Jhirka, Punahana, Hodal, Hathin, Nuh, Palwal, Taoru, Ballabgarh, Sohna, Gurugram, Rewari, Pataudi, Jhajjar, Bahadurgarh, Berikhas, Sampla, Rohtak, Faridabad, Samalkha, Bapouli, Meham, Gohana, Julana, Israna, Safidon, Jind, and Panipat.
Potential Risks and Damages
The IMD has warned of possible risks including tree branch breakage, flying debris, and lightning strikes on vulnerable spots such as large trees, electric towers, water bodies, building tops, and hilltops. Standing crops, including horticultural crops, may also suffer damage. Power shutdowns could cause disruptions.
Safety Advisories for Citizens
Citizens are advised to stay away from electric poles and power lines and beware of flying debris. If driving and unable to reach a safe location, pull over at a safe place and remain inside a closed vehicle. Do not take shelter under trees or go near water bodies. The IMD urged everyone to follow these precautions to stay safe during the thunderstorm.
