Haryana Weather: Thunderstorms, Heatwave Alert by IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Thursday, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across parts of Haryana and Chandigarh on May 14. Heatwave conditions are expected to develop in some parts of the state from May 17 onwards.

Weather Forecast for May 14

According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, light to moderate rain is likely in districts including Gurgaon, Faridabad, Palwal, Nuh, Rewari, Mahendragarh, Charkhi Dadri, Bhiwani, and Jhajjar. Thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour may occur in these areas during this period.

Recent Weather Activity

On Wednesday, residents of Gurgaon and other parts of Delhi-NCR experienced cloudy skies and light drizzle in some areas, providing brief relief from rising temperatures. Around 8 PM, several parts of Gurgaon and nearby areas witnessed rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorm activity, bringing much-needed respite from the prevailing heat. However, officials noted that rainfall activity is expected to remain scattered and uneven across the region.

Temperature Records

Temperatures remained high in several parts of Haryana. IMD data showed the state’s average maximum temperature increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius compared to Tuesday, though it remained near normal overall. Sirsa recorded the highest maximum temperature in Haryana at 44 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Among NCR districts, Gurgaon recorded a maximum temperature of 37.1 degrees Celsius, while Nuh recorded 39.7 degrees Celsius. Rohtak recorded 41.2 degrees Celsius and Narnaul 42.5 degrees Celsius. Gurgaon’s minimum temperature settled at 22.5 degrees Celsius.

Upcoming Weather Changes

The weather office said conditions are becoming favorable for the advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16. It also noted a western disturbance likely to affect northwest India from May 15, along with cyclonic circulations over north Pakistan and south Haryana.

Heatwave Forecast

The IMD forecast indicates largely dry weather in Haryana after May 14, with maximum temperatures likely to rise by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius over the next seven days. Heatwave conditions have been forecast at some places between May 17 and May 19.

Advisory for Residents

Officials advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning strikes. Commuters were also advised to expect sudden strong winds and a brief reduction in visibility in some areas. The yellow alert signifies the need to remain aware of potentially disruptive weather conditions, though no major widespread impact is currently expected.
