Amravati city and several parts of the district were lashed by heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds on Monday afternoon, with multiple localities also reporting a hailstorm. The downpour provided much-needed respite from days of oppressive heat that had gripped the region.
Record Rainfall in One Hour
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amravati city recorded 19mm of rainfall in just one hour, marking the highest pre-monsoon shower of the season so far. The sudden weather change brought relief to residents who had been enduring sweltering conditions.
Weather Progression
The day began hot and humid, with intense sunshine making conditions uncomfortable until around 3pm. Although temperatures had eased slightly since Sunday's high of 40.5 degrees Celsius, residents continued to face oppressive heat throughout the day. Around 3.15pm, dark clouds quickly built up over the city as strong winds picked up momentum. By 3.30pm, heavy rain driven by powerful gusts swept across Amravati. The downpour lasted nearly 30 minutes, paused briefly, and then resumed, continuing for almost an hour in total.
Impact of the Storm
The rain significantly cooled the city, bringing temperatures down noticeably. Small hailstones were reported in parts of Amravati, adding to the unusual weather phenomenon. However, the strong winds caused considerable damage. Advertisement hoardings at major intersections were torn down, and at least 11 large trees were uprooted, disrupting traffic across several areas around 4pm.
Response and Restoration
Fire department teams responded promptly, clearing fallen trees to restore traffic movement. Crews also trimmed broken branches in multiple locations to prevent further hazards. Tree falls were reported from various areas, including Lakshmi Nagar, Chitra Talkies Chowk, Maulana Azad Colony, Riddhi Siddhi Apartment in Vikas Nagar, Jameel Colony, Ravi Nagar, the Hanuman Mandir area in Vilas Colony of Navsari, and Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Colony near Kathora Naka, among others.
Authorities Advise Caution
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as pre-monsoon weather activity is likely to continue in the coming days. The IMD has indicated that similar conditions may persist, and residents are advised to stay indoors during severe weather and report any emergencies to the fire department.
