Trimbakeshwar Temple Darshan Suspended Due to Heavy Rains
Continuous heavy rainfall in Nashik district since Monday night has led to the suspension of darshan at the famous Trimbakeshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple authorities announced the closure on Tuesday as a precautionary measure following rising water levels in the nearby Godavari river and waterlogging in the temple premises.
Waterlogging and Safety Concerns
The downpour caused severe waterlogging in low-lying areas of Nashik city, including Panchavati, Gangapur Road, and the old city areas. Several roads were submerged, disrupting traffic and daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Nashik district, predicting extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. According to officials, the Godavari river is flowing dangerously close to the danger mark at several points, prompting authorities to evacuate residents from vulnerable settlements along the riverbanks.
NDRF Teams Deployed
In response to the worsening situation, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed two teams in Nashik to assist with rescue and relief operations. The teams are stationed in the worst-affected areas, ready to evacuate people if needed. District Collector Manisha Khatri said, “We are monitoring the situation closely. People in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations. We have opened 12 relief camps in the district.”
Educational Institutions Closed
As a precaution, the district administration has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Nashik on Tuesday. Private and public offices were also advised to allow employees to work from home where possible. The heavy rains have also disrupted power supply in several parts of the city, with electricity companies working to restore services.
Impact on Daily Life
Train services on the Nashik Road–Manmad section were affected as waterlogging on the tracks forced the cancellation of at least four trains. Bus services operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) were also delayed or diverted. Commuters faced long waits at bus stops and railway stations. The weather department has warned that the heavy rain is likely to continue for the next two days, with a possibility of further intensification.
Historical Context and Precautions
Nashik has a history of flooding during the monsoon season, with the Godavari river often breaching its banks. In 2021, similar heavy rains caused widespread damage and loss of life. This year, the administration has been proactive, with pre-positioned pumps and sandbags in vulnerable areas. The Trimbakeshwar Temple Trust said that the decision to suspend darshan was taken to ensure the safety of pilgrims and staff. “We will reopen only after the water recedes and the temple premises are safe,” a trust official said.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency helplines have been set up, and the district control room is operational 24/7. With more rain predicted, the situation remains critical.
