The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has suspended three employees after a video went viral showing a bus being driven using a mobile phone flashlight due to a headlight failure. The incident occurred in Chitradurga district, raising serious safety concerns.
Viral Video Sparks Action
A video circulating on social media captured the bus moving on a dark road with a passenger holding a mobile flashlight out of the window to illuminate the path. The clip prompted immediate scrutiny from KSRTC officials, who identified the bus and crew involved.
According to KSRTC officials, the incident took place on the Chitradurga-Harihar route on the night of July 5. The bus was reportedly operating without functioning headlights, forcing the driver to rely on the makeshift lighting.
Employees Suspended
Three staff members—the driver, conductor, and a mechanic—have been suspended pending a detailed inquiry. KSRTC Managing Director Shivayogi C. Kalasad confirmed the suspensions, stating, "Safety of passengers is our top priority. Such negligence will not be tolerated."
The driver has been charged with operating a vehicle in an unsafe condition, while the conductor failed to report the defect. The mechanic, who was on duty at the depot, allegedly cleared the bus without proper inspection.
Safety Concerns Raised
The incident has sparked debate about maintenance standards and safety protocols in public transport. Commuters expressed shock, with one passenger stating, "It's terrifying to think that a bus full of people was driven like this. What if something had gone wrong?"
KSRTC has ordered a comprehensive inspection of all buses in the Chitradurga depot and reiterated that vehicles with technical faults must not be allowed on the road. The corporation also plans to issue a circular reminding staff of standard operating procedures for reporting defects.
Action Taken
The suspension order was issued on July 7, and a departmental inquiry has been initiated. The three suspended employees include driver Venkatesh, conductor Ramesh, and mechanic Suresh (names changed as per policy). They will remain suspended until the investigation concludes.
KSRTC officials assured that strict action would be taken if any lapses are found. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance in ensuring passenger safety.
