Planters turned into trash bins on Amritsar's Heritage Street
Decorative planters and green pockets installed along Heritage Street, the pedestrian corridor leading to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, are increasingly being misused as makeshift dustbins. A recent visit by Tribune News Service revealed that several planters were filled with discarded disposable items such as plastic cups, paper plates, and food wrappers instead of plants and flowers. In some spots, waste had accumulated around saplings, while in others, decorative pots were being used as dumping points by visitors.
High tourist footfall exacerbates the problem
The street, one of Amritsar's most prominent tourist stretches, witnesses thousands of pilgrims and visitors daily as they walk toward the Golden Temple. The sight of overflowing litter in designated green spaces has raised concerns about public awareness and the effectiveness of waste management in the area. Rajesh Kumar, a local resident, said, “Heritage Street was developed to showcase the city’s cultural and historical charm. When visitors see garbage dumped in planters, it creates a poor impression of the city.” He urged authorities to install more dustbins and ensure regular monitoring.
Shared responsibility for cleanliness
Another resident, Harpreet Singh, emphasized that maintaining cleanliness around the shrine should be a shared responsibility. “The administration alone cannot solve the problem. Visitors must also avoid littering and use proper waste disposal facilities,” he said. Many visitors expressed disappointment. Priya Sharma, a tourist from Delhi, said, “The street is beautifully designed and offers a pleasant approach to the Golden Temple. Seeing plastic cups and food waste in the planters spoils the overall experience.” Amit Deshmukh, a visitor from Maharashtra, added, “People come here from across the world. Clean surroundings are essential to preserve the dignity and beauty of this heritage zone.”
Call for improved waste management
The situation highlights the need for better waste management infrastructure and public awareness campaigns. With Heritage Street serving as a global tourist destination, maintaining its aesthetic and cleanliness is crucial for Amritsar's image.
