First International Big Cat Alliance Summit Rescheduled to April 2025
IBCA Summit Rescheduled to April 2025

The inaugural summit of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), originally scheduled for April 2024, has been rescheduled to April 2025. The decision was taken to allow more time for preparations and to ensure wider participation from member countries and stakeholders.

Background of the IBCA

The International Big Cat Alliance was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023 during the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger. The alliance aims to conserve seven major big cat species: tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma. It seeks to strengthen global cooperation for the protection of these species and their habitats.

Objectives of the Summit

The summit was envisioned as a platform for member nations to share best practices, discuss challenges, and formulate a joint action plan. Key focus areas include anti-poaching measures, habitat restoration, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and transboundary collaboration. The rescheduling is expected to enhance the summit's effectiveness by allowing more comprehensive preparatory meetings and consultations.

Reactions and Next Steps

India, as the lead country, has been actively engaging with member nations. The new date in April 2025 is expected to align with other global environmental events, maximizing visibility and impact. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has confirmed that the preparatory process will continue, with virtual meetings and workshops planned in the interim.

The IBCA currently has 16 member countries, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and several African nations. The alliance is open to all United Nations member states and aims to expand its membership. The rescheduled summit is anticipated to finalize the governance structure, funding mechanisms, and a roadmap for the next decade.
