IGIMS Patna unveils indigenous surgical innovation on World Ilizarov Day

Patna: The orthopaedics department and the emergency & trauma centre at IGIMS marked the World Ilizarov Day on Monday by unveiling a new indigenous surgical innovation.

Honoring Dr Gavriil Ilizarov

Dr Gavriil Ilizarov, whose pioneering work transformed treatment of complex orthopaedic conditions worldwide, was honored at the event. It was inaugurated by IGIMS director-cum-vice chancellor Dr Bindey Kumar, in the presence of senior faculty, medical officers and staff from orthopaedics, anaesthesiology and emergency services.

Patient Success Stories

Around 41 recovered patients attended the event and shared success stories, highlighting how the Ilizarov technique helped treat complex fractures, bone loss, deformities, limb length discrepancies and non-union cases.

Indigenous Innovation

A key highlight was the introduction of a customised “threaded Schanz pin” developed by Dr Ashutosh Kumar to aid fracture reduction and manipulation, reflecting a practical innovation in fracture management.

Future Technological Advancements

Dr Rishabh Singh from IIT Patna spoke on future technological and engineering advancements in limb reconstruction.

Chief Guests and Activities

Dr Vishvendra Sinha and Dr Bharat Singh attended as chief guests. The programme included case presentations, clinical demonstrations and a cake-cutting ceremony to mark Ilizarov’s birth anniversary, reaffirming IGIMS’s role in advanced orthopaedic care in Bihar.
