The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Ministry of Earth Science on Saturday issued a joint alert for residents of Uttar Pradesh, warning them to brace for dry and hot climatic conditions over the next four days. According to the alert, the entire state will experience a severe heatwave from May 17 to May 20. However, there is a possibility of rains, thunderstorms, and lightning in eastern Uttar Pradesh on May 20, the IMD added.
Orange Alert Issued
The IMD has marked the alert in orange on its eastern and western charts, indicating that people should prepare themselves adequately. Dr. S. N. Sunil Pandey, a weather expert from CSA University, stated on Saturday, "Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over parts of the plains of Northwest and Central India for several days this week."
Temperature Readings in Kanpur
Meanwhile, the CSA weather observatory recorded the maximum temperature in Kanpur on Saturday as 40 degrees Celsius, while the Air Force observatory recorded it as 41 degrees Celsius. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 53 percent. The combination of temperature and humidity makes the weather feel significantly hotter. As a result, most roads in the afternoon wore a deserted look.
Wind Speed and Heat Impact
However, since the north-easterly wind speed was low, ranging from 2.8 to 4.8 kilometers per hour, the impact of the heatwave was somewhat reduced. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid going out during peak afternoon hours.
