The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated places across Kerala until Wednesday, prompting a yellow alert for several southern and central districts. On Monday, the yellow alert is in effect for southern and central districts up to Ernakulam, while Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha will be on alert on Tuesday.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected
IMD has also warned of thunderstorms and strong winds with speeds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph in isolated areas of Kerala and Mahe over the next five days. A cyclone has formed over the Gulf of Mannar and adjacent Sri Lanka, and due to its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the southwest Bay of Bengal by May 11.
Cyclone Impact on Rainfall
Another cyclone is present over the southwest Arabian Sea and areas adjacent to Lakshadweep and the Kerala coast. In view of these systems, the state is expected to receive more rainfall in the coming days.
Pre-Monsoon Rainfall Deficit
Even as pre-monsoon rainfall gains momentum, Kerala has recorded a 22% deficit in rainfall this season so far. Between March 1 and May 9, the state received 150.2 mm of actual rainfall against a normal of 193.3 mm. Only Kozhikode recorded excess rainfall during this period, with 193.8 mm against a normal of 151.9 mm. Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, and Wayanad received normal rainfall, while all other districts recorded deficient rainfall.
District-Wise Deficiency
- Kollam recorded the highest deficiency at 51%, followed by Palakkad at 48%.
- Lakshadweep recorded a 65% deficit in rainfall this season.
- Mahe received 52% excess rainfall during the same period.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation and advises residents to stay updated on weather warnings.
