The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a 'red' alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts on July 6, 2026, predicting very heavy showers and gusty winds reaching up to 70-80 kmph. The upgrade from an earlier 'orange' alert came after the MeT office observed rapid changes in weather conditions.
Alert Upgrade Details
The IMD's Mumbai regional office revised the warning in the morning, citing intensifying monsoon activity. The 'red' alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in 24 hours, posing risks of flooding, landslides, and traffic disruptions. Occasional strong winds with speeds of 70-80 kmph are also forecast over the affected areas.
Impact and Precautions
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors, avoid low-lying areas, and refrain from unnecessary travel. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed emergency response teams and pumps in vulnerable spots. Schools and colleges in some parts may remain closed as a precaution. The IMD warned of waterlogging in suburban Mumbai, Thane city, and Raigad's coastal belts.
According to an IMD official, 'The system has intensified rapidly, and we expect very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. People should follow safety advisories.'
Previous Warnings and Forecast
The alert covers the next 24-48 hours, with conditions likely to improve by July 8. The IMD also noted that the southwest monsoon has been active over central Maharashtra, contributing to the heavy downpour. Last week, an orange alert was in place for these districts.
