The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a 'red' alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The IMD appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been temporarily shut due to continuous downpour in the belt. Meanwhile, multiple rain-related deaths have been reported in the affected areas.
Red Alert Details and Impact
The red alert, the highest level of warning, indicates extremely heavy rainfall expected in the coming hours. The IMD's bulletin warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas, waterlogging on roads, and disruption to transport services. Strong winds with speeds up to 50-60 km/h are also predicted, posing risks to structures and trees.
Mumbai-Pune Expressway Closure
Authorities closed the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as a precautionary measure after waterlogging and reduced visibility made travel hazardous. The closure affects thousands of commuters who use the vital link between the two cities. Alternate routes via the old Mumbai-Pune highway remain open but are also experiencing heavy traffic and waterlogging.
Rain-Related Casualties Reported
Local officials confirmed several deaths due to rain-related incidents, including drowning, electrocution, and building collapses. Rescue teams have been deployed to assist affected communities. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on standby.
Government Advisory and Precautionary Measures
The Maharashtra government has advised people to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel. Schools and colleges in the affected districts have been closed. Emergency services have been put on high alert. Residents in low-lying areas are being evacuated to safer locations.
According to the IMD, the heavy rainfall is likely to continue for the next 24-48 hours. The public is urged to stay updated through official channels and follow safety guidelines.
