India recorded a staggering 56 road accidents and 20 deaths every hour in 2024, according to a recent report. The number of road accidents increased by 1.48% to over 4.87 lakh last year, resulting in a significant loss of life.

The report, released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, reveals that road accidents claimed 1.73 lakh lives in 2024, translating to 20 fatalities per hour. This marks a slight uptick compared to the previous year, underscoring persistent road safety challenges.
Regional Breakdown
Several states reported high accident rates, with Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra topping the list. The majority of accidents were attributed to overspeeding, drunk driving, and poor road infrastructure.
Authorities have emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and enhanced public awareness campaigns to curb the rising trend.
