The Bamboo Farmers’ Federation in Karnataka has been honoured with a rare global certification, recognising its sustainable practices and empowerment of rural women. The certification spans 6,671 small and marginal women farmers across 1,112.9 hectares in Shivamogga, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru districts.
Recognition for Sustainable Farming
This prestigious award highlights the federation’s efforts in promoting bamboo cultivation as a climate-resilient livelihood. The certification validates the farmers’ adherence to international standards of organic and sustainable agriculture, boosting their access to premium markets.
Empowering Women Farmers
The federation, primarily comprising women from marginalised communities, has transformed bamboo farming into a profitable venture. The certification is expected to enhance income opportunities and strengthen the local economy.
Officials noted that the recognition sets a benchmark for other farmer groups in the region. The federation plans to expand its membership and replicate the model in neighbouring areas.
