The state government is formulating a comprehensive plan to develop the historic Lakkundi into a top archaeological centre at the national level, said tourism minister HK Patil.
Inauguration of Preservation Work
Inaugurating the preservation and development work of six monuments, the unveiling of 10 wells and temples, and the archaeological exploration week programme in Lakkundi on Saturday, Patil stated the goal is to unveil over 100 temples and wells by next year.
"Unveiling of five temples and wells has already been completed, and now 10 more wells and temples have been introduced to the public. This has increased the number of archaeological monuments to over 70. Many temples and wells in Lakkundi lost their identity over time due to negligence. The government, with the cooperation of locals, has undertaken the task of rediscovering and revitalising them. The aim is to unveil at least 50 wells and 50 temples by 2026, surpassing the target of 100," he added.
Funding and Development Plans
He further said: "Currently, Rs 10.2 crore has been released for the development of monuments. Allocations include Rs 1.6 crore for Basaveshwara Temple in Halagundi, Rs 1.7 crore for Kanner Well, Rs 1.7 crore for Mallikarjuna Temple, Rs 1.8 crore for Virupaksheshwara Temple, Rs 1.8 crore for Chandramouleshwara Temple, and Rs 1.5 crore for Kalmath Gate and Well. A plan has been formulated to establish the best open-air museum in the country in Lakkundi. Over 1,200 artefacts have been catalogued, and their number is expected to exceed 2,000 soon."
World Heritage Aspirations
Legislative Council chairman Basavaraj Horatti said when witnessing the historical grandeur of Lakkundi, one feels a sense of pride. "Lakkundi would soon be included in the World Heritage List. Recent discoveries of archaeological artefacts and gold coins have drawn national attention. Previously considered merely a transit point, Lakkundi is now showcasing its historical significance to the world," he added.
