Kashmiri Pandits throng Kheer Bhawani Mela amid tight security

Thousands of devotees, predominantly Kashmiri Pandits from across India and abroad, converged at the Mata Kheer Bhawani Temple in Tulmulla, Ganderbal district, on Monday to celebrate the annual Kheer Bhawani Mela on the occasion of Jyeshta Ashtami.

Security and Arrangements

A multi-layer security ring was deployed around the temple complex and along the approach routes to ensure safety. The temple premises, shaded by ancient chinar trees, were adorned festively as devotees offered milk and kheer (rice pudding) at the sacred spring within the complex.

LG Manoj Sinha's Visit

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid obeisance at the shrine and prayed for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters, Sinha expressed satisfaction that the number of pilgrims this year exceeded that of previous years. He interacted with Kashmiri Pandit community members, representatives of various organisations, PM Package employees, and civil society groups, listening to their concerns and assuring them of the administration's commitment to their welfare.

“Today, I prayed for the well-being, peace and prosperity of all. May the blessings of Mata Kheer Bhawani be upon everyone. The administration has made comprehensive arrangements to ensure the convenience, safety and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage,” Sinha said.

Political and Community Reactions

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also visited the temple and described the scenes at the mela as “heartwarming beyond words,” emphasising the need to move beyond past divisions. Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq extended greetings on X: “On the occasion of Mela Kheer Bhawani, I extend my warm greetings to our Kashmiri Pandit brethren. May this day renew the spirit of mutual respect, brotherhood and the shared heritage of Kashmir that we inherited.”

Devotional Significance

The Kheer Bhawani Mela is a key religious event for Kashmiri Pandits, who offer milk and kheer at the spring, believed to change colour as an omen. The festival fosters communal harmony and highlights the region's syncretic traditions.
