Kaziranga Jeep Safari Closed from May 25 for Monsoon

Guwahati: Jeep safari operations at Kaziranga National Park will remain suspended from May 25 as the monsoon season approaches in Assam, officials confirmed. Elephant safari in the park had already been halted for the season.

“The elephant and jeep safaris will resume once the monsoon is over, by October or November,” an official stated.

Kaziranga National Park has grown into the most prestigious tourist destination in the state over the years, a status reinforced by an unprecedented surge in visitor footfall. The UNESCO World Heritage site experienced a phenomenal quadruple increase in visitors during the recently concluded financial year.

Park director Sonali Ghosh highlighted that records from 2016-17 to 2025-26 show a consistent rise in tourist numbers. “Total visitors have increased more than three times in the last 10 years, with a 4.5% increase in foreign tourists in the 2025-26 financial year compared to 2016-17,” she added.

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, recognized as India’s seventh UNESCO World Heritage Site, is globally renowned for its rich biodiversity and the famed “Big Five” wildlife species: the greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, wild buffalo, and eastern swamp deer. Spread across the districts of Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Biswanath, the protected landscape comprises three forest divisions: Eastern Assam Wildlife Division (Bokakhat), Biswanath Wildlife Division (Biswanath Chariali), and Nagaon Wildlife Division.
