Thiruvananthapuram Technopark-based company HEX20 has achieved a second successful launch with its spacecraft Kinetic Optical Yaw Observer (KOYO), which was launched by SpaceX's Transporter-17 mission last week. The spacecraft was developed for the National Central University of Taiwan.
HEX20's Growing Space Presence
HEX20, a startup based in the Technopark technology hub in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is making strides in the space sector. The company's KOYO spacecraft was part of SpaceX's Transporter-17 rideshare mission, which launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on July 8, 2026. This marks the second successful deployment of a HEX20-built satellite, following an earlier mission in 2025.
The KOYO satellite is designed for observing yaw motion using optical sensors, a key capability for attitude control and navigation in space. The National Central University of Taiwan will utilize KOYO for research and educational purposes, contributing to advancements in satellite technology.
Significance for Kerala's Space Ecosystem
The success of HEX20 highlights the growing capabilities of Kerala's private space industry. Technopark, one of India's largest IT parks, has become a hub for aerospace startups. HEX20's achievement demonstrates that companies outside traditional space centers like Bengaluru and Hyderabad can compete globally. According to Arjun Raghunath, a spokesperson for HEX20, "This launch validates our engineering expertise and opens doors for more international collaborations."
The SpaceX Transporter-17 mission carried multiple small satellites from various countries, showcasing the increasing accessibility of space through rideshare programs. HEX20's participation underscores India's role in the global small satellite market, which is projected to grow significantly in the coming years.
Impact and Future Plans
HEX20 plans to expand its satellite manufacturing capacity and target more international clients. The company is also exploring applications in Earth observation and communications. With two successful launches, HEX20 is positioning itself as a reliable partner for academic and commercial space missions.
The Kerala government has expressed support for space startups, offering incentives and infrastructure at Technopark. This ecosystem could attract more investment and talent, boosting the state's economy. The success of KOYO also strengthens India's reputation as a competitive player in the global space industry, particularly in the small satellite segment.
