Heavy rain continued to lash several parts of Kerala on Monday, leading to one death and causing extensive damage to houses and property. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming hours.
One Dead, Houses Damaged
In a tragic incident, a person was killed after a wall collapsed due to incessant rains in the state. Several houses were damaged, and many low-lying areas were flooded, forcing residents to move to safer locations. Rescue teams have been deployed to assist affected families.
Red Alert Issued for Five Districts
The IMD has sounded a red alert for the districts of Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram, predicting extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours. An orange alert has been issued for six other districts, including Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.
Rescue and Relief Operations
State disaster response forces and local authorities are conducting rescue operations in affected areas. Relief camps have been set up in several locations to accommodate displaced families. The government has urged people to follow safety guidelines and stay informed about weather updates.
Impact on Daily Life
The heavy downpour has disrupted normal life, with waterlogging reported on major roads and in urban areas. Train services have been affected in some routes, and schools in several districts have declared a holiday. Power outages have been reported in some regions due to snapped electricity lines.
Authorities have cautioned that the situation may worsen in the next 24 hours and have requested people to cooperate with rescue teams. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as rough conditions are expected.
