Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chamba, has initiated a month-long nationwide campaign titled 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' to encourage scientific farming practices, soil conservation, and sustainable agriculture across the district. The campaign runs from June 1 to June 30 and involves active collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Department of Horticulture, Department of Animal Husbandry, and NABARD.
Campaign Objectives and Implementation
Senior Scientist and Head of Chamba KVK, Dharminder Kumar, stated that multidisciplinary teams comprising officials from KVK, Agriculture, Horticulture, and ATMA departments will visit all seven development blocks of the district. The goal is to raise awareness among farmers about sustainable agricultural practices and the importance of protecting agricultural land. Kumar emphasized the need to preserve soil fertility and maintain long-term productivity for sustainable agricultural development. He urged farmers to reduce excessive reliance on chemical fertilizers and adopt balanced nutrient management to improve soil health and crop yields.
Key Focus Areas
- Soil Conservation: Promoting practices that prevent soil degradation and enhance fertility.
- Water Management: Educating farmers on water conservation techniques and efficient irrigation methods.
- Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Encouraging adoption of farming techniques that withstand climate variability.
- Judicious Use of Inputs: Guiding farmers on balanced fertilizer application and identification of counterfeit seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides.
Activities and Farmer Support
During the campaign, farmers will receive guidance on soil testing, Soil Health Cards, natural farming methods, and water conservation measures. Awareness programs will help farmers distinguish counterfeit agricultural inputs, protecting them from financial losses. The campaign also serves as a platform to connect farmers with government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Kisan Credit Card scheme, and farm mechanization programs.
KVK officials expressed confidence that the initiative will strengthen awareness about sustainable farming, improve soil health management, and enhance farmers' access to agricultural technologies and government services, ultimately contributing to the overall development of the farming sector in Chamba district.
