Landslide at Mormugao Harbour Kills Worker, Injures Another

A devastating landslide near Mormugao harbour on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a worker and left another injured while work was underway on a retaining wall along the national highway. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM when a large section of earth gave way, trapping laborers beneath debris.

Victims and Rescue Operation

The deceased has been identified as Manoranjan Bind, a native of Jharkhand, who was buried under tonnes of mud and rocks. After an intensive rescue operation lasting several hours, his body was recovered. Another worker, Rajendra, sustained minor injuries and was promptly admitted to the Chicalim sub-district hospital for treatment. Two other laborers managed to escape unhurt, officials confirmed.

Cause of the Landslide

According to officials, the landslide was triggered by porous soil that had been weakened by heavy rainfall on Sunday night. The area had experienced continuous downpour, saturating the ground and making it unstable. The South Goa collector, Egna Cleetus, visited the site and conducted an inspection. He directed the contractor and the Public Works Department (PWD) authorities to expedite the completion of the remaining work before the onset of the full monsoon season to prevent further incidents.

Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar termed the incident unfortunate and warned that recurring landslides in the area continue to pose a serious threat to commuters and residents. He called for immediate remedial measures to ensure safety.

The incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols and the quality of infrastructure work in the region. Local authorities have assured a thorough investigation and promised action against those responsible for any lapses.
