Makhana Elephant from Chandaka Strays into Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A makhana elephant that dispersed from the Chandaka wildlife sanctuary strayed into the Pathargadia area on the outskirts of the city on Monday, triggering panic among local residents. The elephant, which is known to remain solitary, was seen roaming in the area.

Forest Officials Reassure Public

Chandaka authorities have stated that the elephant is not aggressive and has not attacked anyone. Earlier, the same elephant approached human habitation but returned on its own, with forest personnel monitoring its movements closely. Binod Acharya, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Chandaka, said, "Since it is a makhana elephant, it mostly remains isolated and does not mingle with any herd. It is well-built but has no history of aggressive behavior. However, we are keeping a watch on its activities."

Previous Sightings

This makhana elephant has been sighted before around the Sikharchandi area, a popular tourist spot in the city. According to Acharya, "Usually, tuskers keep coming to Sikharchandi area, and during those times, the makhana elephant avoids coming towards the city. But it has come alone several times."

Seasonal Trends and Past Incidents

Forest department officials noted that in April, two errant tuskers dispersed from Chandaka, attracted by mangoes growing in orchards near the sanctuary. They added that tourist activities dip in summer, reducing the chance of human-elephant conflict, as visitor presence near Chandaka becomes minimal.

In February, an errant wild tusker that had caused havoc in human settlements in the city was tranquillized. Additionally, tourism near Sikharchandi was suspended for two days in December due to the presence of elephants.

The forest department continues to monitor the situation and advises residents to remain cautious but not panic.
