In a decisive action against environmental crime, a man was arrested for illegally cutting khair trees from the protected area of Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary in Yamunanagar district, Haryana. The arrest was made on June 3 after forest officials received intelligence about illegal logging activities in the Tibdiya village area.
Forest Department's Swift Action
Divisional Forest Officer Sandeep Saini stated that the Forest Department has been intensifying efforts to curb the illegal felling of khair trees, which are valuable for their timber and ecological importance. A patrol team, acting on a specific tip-off, reached the Tibdiya forest area and caught the accused red-handed while he was carrying wood after cutting down two khair trees.
The DFO emphasized that the department is committed to protecting forest resources and will not tolerate any illegal activities. The accused was immediately taken into custody, and a preliminary investigation revealed that he had illegally felled two khair trees from the sanctuary area.
Ongoing Investigation and Raids
During interrogation, the accused provided crucial information about other absconding associates involved in the illegal logging operation. The Wildlife Department has launched continuous raids to apprehend these individuals. A complaint regarding the case has been submitted to the court, and the accused was produced before the Vyaspur court, which sent him to judicial custody.
The Forest Department has urged the general public to cooperate in the protection of forests and wildlife. Officials appealed to citizens to immediately report any suspicious activities to the department, emphasizing that community involvement is vital for conservation efforts.
Importance of Khair Trees
Khair trees (Acacia catechu) are native to the Indian subcontinent and are known for their durable wood and medicinal properties. They play a significant role in the ecosystem, providing habitat for wildlife and preventing soil erosion. Illegal logging of such trees not only violates environmental laws but also threatens biodiversity.
The Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Shivalik foothills, is a protected area rich in flora and fauna. The sanctuary is home to several species of mammals, birds, and reptiles, making its conservation a priority for the state government.
This arrest serves as a warning to those involved in illegal logging activities. The Forest Department has assured that strict action will be taken against all perpetrators, and efforts to safeguard the sanctuary will continue unabated.
