Representatives of 11 cultural organisations in Mandi district convened on Sunday to address the decline of folk arts and devise a collective strategy to preserve Himachal Pradesh's cultural heritage. The seminar, held at Tapas Academy under the chairmanship of senior artiste Roop Upadhyay, focused on strengthening cultural unity, encouraging youth participation, and improving institutional support for traditional arts.
Key concerns raised by artistes
Participants expressed concern that rapid social and technological changes, coupled with the influence of commercial entertainment and cinema, had reduced young people's engagement with folk music, theatre, and traditional dance. Seminar coordinator Kuldeep Guleria, founding president of Mandavy Kala Manch, noted the urgent need to create meaningful opportunities for young artistes through workshops, theatre productions, festivals, and mentorship programmes.
Infrastructure deficit in Mandi
A major issue highlighted was the lack of adequate cultural infrastructure in Mandi town. Artistes cited the absence of a centrally located venue for rehearsals, workshops, and performances. According to the speakers, this shortage has hindered the growth of cultural activities in the district. The seminar resolved to establish a common platform to collectively represent artistes and cultural institutions before government authorities, advocating for improved infrastructure and greater institutional support.
Protecting local talent from outside organisations
The seminar also addressed concerns about outside organisations conducting cultural programmes in Himachal Pradesh while offering limited opportunities and recognition to local artistes. Participants pledged to work collectively to safeguard the interests and dignity of local cultural practitioners and ensure regional talent receives deserved recognition.

Prominent attendees included Inderpal Indu of Navjyoti Sports and Cultural Art Forum, Rampal Malik of Saakh Society, Seema Sharma of Himachal Pradesh Cultural Research Institute, Daksha Sharma of Utsav, Anil Manhat of Aakar Theatre Society, Latesh Sharma of Tapas Academy, Biri Singh of Shiv Gauri Kala Manch, Hardev Singh Chauhan of Sabrang Kala Manch, and Roop Upadhyay of Prayas Kala Parishad. They unanimously resolved to form a common platform to advocate for artiste welfare and cultural preservation.
