Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has achieved the prestigious Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Zero Waste certification, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. The certification recognizes the airport's exemplary waste management practices, which include segregation, recycling, and disposal of waste with minimal environmental impact.
Recognition for Sustainable Practices
The CII Zero Waste certification is awarded to organizations that demonstrate effective waste management and resource recovery. MIA implemented a comprehensive waste management system that covers all types of waste generated at the airport, including municipal solid waste, biomedical waste, and hazardous waste. The airport achieved a waste diversion rate of over 90%, meaning most waste is reused, recycled, or converted into energy rather than sent to landfills.
Key Initiatives
To earn this certification, MIA adopted several innovative measures. The airport set up a centralized waste segregation facility where waste is sorted into categories such as organic, plastic, paper, and metal. Organic waste is processed in an in-house composting unit, producing manure used for landscaping. Plastic waste is sent for recycling, while e-waste is handled by authorized recyclers. The airport also installed a biogas plant that converts food waste into cooking gas for its staff canteen.
Additionally, MIA implemented a ban on single-use plastics within the terminal and encouraged passengers to use water refill stations. The airport's efforts have not only reduced its carbon footprint but also saved costs on waste disposal.
Setting a Benchmark
Mangaluru Airport is among the few airports in India to receive this certification, setting a benchmark for other airports and industries. The achievement aligns with the global aviation industry's push towards sustainable operations and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Airport director expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating that it reflects the team's commitment to environmental stewardship.
Future Plans
MIA plans to further enhance its waste management system by integrating advanced technologies such as IoT-based monitoring of waste bins and expanding its recycling capabilities. The airport aims to achieve net-zero waste in the coming years and inspire other organizations to adopt similar practices.
