In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Mizoram police seized approximately 2.02 lakh methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 19.21 crore from Keifang town on Monday evening. The contraband, weighing 24.016 kg, was recovered during a routine check on the outskirts of Keifang junction, according to H Ramthlengliana, Inspector General of Police and Chief Public Relations Officer of the state police.
Details of the Seizure
Ramthlengliana stated that a car bearing Meghalaya registration plates, traveling from Manipur towards Aizawl, was intercepted and searched by police. "Upon a search, 20 bundles of methamphetamine, totaling 2,02,000 tablets, with an approximate market value of Rs 19,21,28,000 was recovered. The contraband was concealed inside the back side of the vehicle, below the spare tyre compartment, and on both sides beyond the mud guard, wrapped in black polythene," he added.
Arrests and Legal Action
The accused, identified as Th Onkhothang Haokip (33) of Moreh in Manipur and Mathew (46) of Jolzam in Churachandpur, Manipur, were arrested at the scene. The vehicle and the seized drugs were taken into custody. A case has been registered under Sections 22(c), 25, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and an investigation is currently underway.
Modus Operandi and Routes
Enforcement agencies have noted that drug trafficking via the Mizoram-Myanmar border has been ongoing, particularly through Champhai district. However, traffickers have been adapting by altering their routes, now transporting heroin and methamphetamine through Manipur to evade detection. This seizure highlights the evolving tactics used by drug networks in the region.
Authorities continue to monitor and intercept illegal drug movements, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance along the northeastern borders.
