Aizawl: In a series of coordinated operations, Mizoram Police seized a total of 2.833 kg of heroin valued at over Rs 5.05 crore across three districts on Wednesday and Thursday, officials confirmed on Thursday.
Major Seizure in Saitual District
According to H Ramthlengliana, Inspector General of Police and chief public relations officer of Mizoram Police, a car with an Assam registration number was intercepted during random checking on the outskirts of Keifang town on Wednesday night. The vehicle, driven by a juvenile and traveling from Manipur to Aizawl, was stopped at Keifang Kualmawi based on suspicion. A thorough search, conducted in the presence of witnesses, led to the recovery of 2.493 kg of heroin concealed inside a modified back seat hole. The contraband is estimated to be worth over Rs 4.98 crore. The juvenile driver was apprehended following legal procedures, and a criminal case has been registered at Saitual Police Station.
Second Seizure in Khawzawl District
In a separate incident, police in Khawzawl district seized 34 grams of heroin valued at Rs 6.80 lakh from Johny Hramnuntluanga, a 31-year-old resident of Hmunlai, Tahan (Kalaymyo), Myanmar. He was traveling as a passenger in a cab when the heroin, strapped to his thighs and back with cello tape, was discovered during a search around noon on Wednesday.
Joint Operation in Champhai District
Meanwhile, the state Excise and Narcotics Department, in coordination with Assam Rifles personnel, conducted a joint operation on Thursday at Zote Bypass Road in Champhai district, seizing over 620 grams of heroin. One suspect, Jaydanamul Barbhuiya (28) of Lokanathpur, Cachar district, Assam, was arrested in connection with the seizure.
These operations highlight the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb drug trafficking in the northeastern region of India.
