The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for Mumbai, predicting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on June 22, 2026. The alert comes as a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea is expected to intensify, bringing severe weather conditions to the city and surrounding regions.
IMD Forecast Details
According to the IMD, Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph. The alert is in effect for the entire day, with the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.
"We advise residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the alert period," said an IMD official. The department has also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea as conditions are likely to be rough.
Impact on Daily Life
The heavy rain is expected to disrupt normal life in Mumbai, with potential waterlogging on roads and railways. Commuters may face delays in local train services, which are the lifeline of the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed pumps and rescue teams to vulnerable areas to handle any emergencies.
Schools and colleges have been advised to remain closed or shift to online classes for the day. Offices in the private sector have also been urged to allow work-from-home options to reduce traffic congestion and ensure safety.
Precautionary Measures
The IMD has urged people to take necessary precautions, including staying away from trees, hoardings, and other structures that could collapse due to strong winds. Residents in flood-prone areas should move to higher ground and keep emergency kits ready. The BMC has set up control rooms to monitor the situation and provide assistance.
"We are closely monitoring the weather and will issue updates as needed. Citizens should follow safety guidelines and cooperate with authorities," a BMC spokesperson stated.
Regional Weather Update
The heavy rain spell is not limited to Mumbai; parts of Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts are also under a similar alert. The IMD has predicted that the weather may improve by June 23, but intermittent showers are likely to continue for the next few days.
This weather event is typical for Mumbai during the monsoon season, which officially began earlier this month. The city has already received above-average rainfall in June, and this latest system is expected to add to the seasonal total.
